NECOS to organize cricket tournaments

By a Staff Reporter Kathmandu - Nepal Confederation of Sports (NECOS) affiliated to the CPN UML has announced to organize men’s and women’s cricket tournaments this year. Organising a press conference in the capital on Sunday, NECOS said it will organize two-day cricket in the men’s category as well as women’s cricket in coordination with the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). The cricket tournaments will feature teams from  all seven provinces and a team of NECOS. “We will unveil the date of the tournament after consulting with CAN,” said Biplav Ghosh, chairman of NECOS, adding, “Our objective is to organize cricket across the country. Karuna Bhandari out of action for nine months

By a Staff Reporter Kathmandu - Karuna Bhandari, an experienced spinner of the Nepali national women’s cricket team, has been sidelined for nine months due to injury layoff. Bhandari had undergone operation of her right knee ligament (ACL) on Thursday and will miss action for at least nine months. Her surgery was done at Old Baneshwar-based Frontline Hospital in the capital. She was discharged from the hospital on Sunday afternoon. She sustained knee injury during a training session with the national team in April. Bhandari said she opted for a surgery upon doctors’ advice. By a Staff Reporter Kathmandu - Nepal has crashed out of the ACC Women’s T20 Championship after its semifinal match against the UAE was disrupted by rainfall on Friday. After the rainfall prevented the match from being completed, the UAE was announced the winners by the virtue of being the champions of Group A. Nepal had made it to the semifinal as the runners-up of Group B. Nepal had made a good start to the semifinal by restricting the UAE to 81 runs in 19.5 overs at the Kinrara Academy Oval in Malaysia. Ashmina Karmacharya’s five-wicket haul helped Nepal restrict the UAE to a meagre total. Nepal had a modest target of 82 runs for victory but the second  innings could not be held due to rainfall. If Nepal defeats the UAE in the semifinal, they will qualify for the Women’s Asia Cup. Nepal reached the semifinal as the runner-up of Group B while the UAE made it to the semis as winners of Group A. By a Staff Reporter Kathmandu - Nepali cricket team’s all-rounder Dipendra Singh Airee has ranked ninth in the new T20I ranking in all-rounder category published by the ICC on Wednesday. This is the highest ranking ever achieved by a Nepali player in its cricket history. Airee is ranked ninth in the all-rounder category with rating points of 152. Prior to this, he was ranked tenth. Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi is currently the top ranked all-rounder I n T20I ranking followed by Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh, Moin Ali of England, and Glen Maxwell of Australia.
