Nepali National Cricket Team Head Coach Pubudu Dassanayake has stepped down from his job.
Pubudu announced his resignation amidst a press conference on Wednesday.
Dassanayake was appointed as a head coach for the second time last year. He quitted today after working for 7 months.
He was under pressure due to the bad results of the team recently. Pubudu came back to Nepal last December.
Nepal created a history by playing the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2014 when Dassanayake was the head coach. Similarly, Nepal got promoted to Division 2 from Division 4 in between 2011 to 2015 A.D. when Pubudu was in charge of the team for the first time.
Dassanayake left Nepali Cricket in 2015 due to internal conflict within the CAN. Dassanayake, who returned back after 6 years, has consistently achieved awful results.
Under Dassanayake’s leadership, Nepal has lost 9 out of 14 ODIs by winning 4. One game ended in a draw. Likewise in T20, Nepal won 10 matches and lost 3 in 13 played. Among 14 ODIs, 12 matches was played in World Cup League-2 where Nepal lost 7 matches.
The major reason behind appointing Pubudu was to qualify for the T20 World Cup to be held in October/November 2022 in Australia.
Nepal got a step closer to compete in the T20 World Cup as the team managed to reach the semi finals of T20 World Cup Qualifier after three consecutive wins in group stage. But the team lost the semi final match against UAE by 68 runs. Following the adequate batting Nepal got all out in 18.4 overs chasing the winning target of 176 runs. Along with the defeat, a golden opportunity to qualify for the T20 World Cup was denied. As the coach was not able to fulfil the prime objective, he got under pressure after which the performance of the team significantly declined.
Dassanayake will leave Nepal and fly towards Canada on Friday.
