Kathmandu – South Asian Games (SAG) gold medalists Bir Bahadur Mahara and Nima Gharti Magar are set to carry the flag of Nepal at the opening ceremony of the 19th Asian Games (ASIAD) in Huanzhou, China.

Nima, who won a gold medal in Wushu in the 12th and 13th SAGs, and Bir, who won a gold medal in Taekwondo in the 13th SAG, will carry the flag of Nepal in the march pass of the opening ceremony.

Since the Tokyo Olympics, the International Olympic Committee has enforced a rule mandating equal representation of both men and women in the march during the opening ceremony. The Olympic Council of Asia has also upheld this directive.

In this edition of the Asian Games, Nepal is making a significant presence with a record-breaking contingent of 253 athletes. Accompanying them are coaches for 29 different sports and various officials, all representing Nepal in China.

Competition has already commenced in men’s volleyball, table tennis, and women’s football, even before the grand opening ceremony. Unfortunately, Nepal’s men’s volleyball team faced a tough start, exiting the group stage with losses in both of their initial matches. Meanwhile, the women’s and men’s table tennis teams, who previously experienced defeats in the team event on Friday, are gearing up for their upcoming matches on Saturday morning.

Nepal Women’s Football Team also succumbed to Vietnam in the opening fixture earlier today.
