Nepal to compete in 23 events during the 19th Asian Games

Kathmandu – Nepal will compete in 23 events during the upcoming Asian Games. The 19th Asian Games will be held in China from September 10 to 25.

A board meeting of the National Sports Council (NSC) presided over by its chairman and Sports Minister Maheshwar Jung Gahatraj on Friday fixed the number of sports disciplines Nepal will be taking part in the upcoming Asian Games.

The same meeting also approved 36 events for the Ninth National Games to be held in Gandaki Province from June 5 to 11.

As per the decision, the sports disciplines Nepal will compete during the Asiad include taekwondo, karate, boxing, athletics, cycling, women’s football, golf, wrestling, weightlifting, judo, swimming, triathlon, wushu, archery, basketball, kabaddi, fencing, handball, table tennis, women’s volleyball, men’s cricket, shooting and badminton.

Nepal had participated in 29 events during the 18th edition of Asian Games. Nepal had secured a lone medal (silver) in paragliding on the occasion.

Sports officials said that the events were selected on the basis of past results and the current success of the players.

Friday’s meeting also decided to initiate the process of fixing the budget for the selection of players, closed camp training and other preparatory works for the Asian Games.
