Manchester United suffered a 2-1 home shock loss by the bottom club Sheffield United of the Premier League. With the result, Manchester City sit at the top of the league table.
Harry Maguire had canceled out Kean Bryan’s first-half opener for the Yorkshire side. Sheffield had won just one league game all season before their trip to Old Trafford, thanks to substitute Oliver Burke who snatched the 74th-minute winner.
After 19 matches in Premier League history and without a league win at Old Trafford in 48 years, Chris Wilder’s side went into the game with the worst record. But they showed just the kind of resolve and battle they would need if they are to get out of trouble somehow.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to rotate his side, leaving Fred and Scott McTominay out of the central midfield. This had a significant effect on the United game, missing the pace and pressure that the pair offered in the center of the pitch. In the 23rd minute, when Bryan headed in John Fleck’s corner with United keeper David De Gea flapping at the cross, Sheffield went ahead.
Meanwhile replays showed he may have been moved by Sheffield striker Billy Sharp and the goal was controversial. When Anthony Martial had the ball in the net, United’s outrage over that decision was intensified. Harry Maguire ruled the attempt out for a foul on keeper Aaron Ramsdale and hence it was disallowed.
Solskjaer’s side lacked some of the zip and creativity of their recent good run of form. However when their Sheffield-born captain Harry Maguire answered an Alex Telles corner with an irresistible corner, they managed to get on even terms. However, Burke’s low drive deflected off Axel Tuanzebe and crashed in from the underside of the crossbar, United charged the price of reluctant defending.
Man Utd are 2nd following the loss with 40 points, one behind the leaders Man City. While Sheffield United are bottom of the table with just 8 points.
