Holders Nepal defend Asian volleyball championship title

Kathmandu – Defending champions Nepal have lifted the title of AVC Central Zone Volleyball Championship in the women’s section for a second straight time.

Nepal defeated Uzbekistan in the second edition of the championship held in Bangladesh on Tuesday to retain the title. Nepal were unbeaten throughout the championship.

During the title clash held in Mirpur, Dhaka, Nepal saw off Uzbekistan 3-2 in a five-set match. Nepal won the match with a score of 26-24, 24-26, 25-15, 22-25 and 15-10.

Nepal had won the first edition of the championship held in Bangladesh in 2019 by defeating the Maldives in straight sets in the final.

Setter Kripa Adhikari and middle blocker Manisha Chaudhary returned to the national team for this championship while Shanti Tharu, Kamana Bista and Laxmi Chand made their debuts.

Out of the total 21 sets played by Nepal during this edition of the championship, Nepal won 18 sets and lost three sets. Nepal played a total of six matches during the entire championship.

Earlier, Sri Lanka defeated Kyrgyzstan 3-0 to finish third in the championship.

A total of six teams including hosts Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and the Maldives had competed in the women’s section of the championship that kicked off on December 23.
