Casillas returns to Real Madrid

Legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas has completed his return to Real Madrid. But this time as the new deputy to the Real Madrid Foundation’s chief executive.

Casillas made no less than 725 appearances for Real during his 16-year spell at the Santiago Bernabeu. Between 1999 and 2015 he won winning five La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues, before leaving to join Porto. In early2019, a heart attack led to the eventual retirement of Casillas in the summer of 2020. And he soon entered into negotiations with the Real Hierarchy about an emotional return to his boyhood club.

Real went to their official website after months of rumors to announce that Casillas has now officially taken up a seat in the boardroom at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Casillas will support Real’s mission to use football as a means of teaching essential life skills. As part of his position within the Foundation he will help those in the broader world suffering from some sort of marginalization or discrimination. Real fans will be pleased to see one of the most famous players of their club finally return to the club in some capacity. Particularly after his less-than-ideal departure from the Bernabeu five years ago could have harmed the player-club relationship.
