Bhutan registers historic win to reach the semifinal

Kathmandu – Bhutan National Women’s Football team registered its first-ever victory in the SAFF Women’s Championship. Bhutan, who has been participating in the championship since 2010 scored 5 past Sri Lanka at Dashrath Stadium to march on to the semifinal of the championship.

Namgyel Dema scored Bhutan’s first goal of the championship in the 42nd minute of the match. Deki Lhazom doubled the lead in the 50th minute.

Deki scored her second and the team’s third in the 63rd minute from the spot. Bhutan earned the spot kick after Deki was fouled inside the box by Selvaraj Yuwarani. Tshering Yangden netted into an empty post in the 84th minute. Tshering Lhaden put ice on the cake in the 89th minute of the match.  

With the win, Bhutan marched on to the semifinal of the SAFF Championship. Bhutan lost its first match against Nepal by 4-0. Sri Lanka will face Nepal on September 12. In Group B, Nepal and Bhutan earned 3 points each whereas Sri Lanka is pointless.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals. The final is scheduled for 19th September.
