Nepal to compete only against Vietnam in the initial stage of Olympic Qualifiers

Kathmandu – The Nepal National Women’s Football Team will only have to compete against Vietnam in the Asian Qualifiers (First Round) of the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024.

Nepal was initially pitted in Group ‘C’ along with Afghanistan, Palestine, and Vietnam. However, due to Palestine’s and Afghanistan’s withdrawal from the qualifiers, Nepal will now only face Vietnam. The Afghanistan Football Federation (AFF) issued a statement stating that it will not allow players outside the country to represent them or plan to organize a women’s national team.

With this, Nepal will now host only Vietnam in the two qualifier matches in the Dasarath Stadium on April 5 and 8 as informed by the All Nepal Football Association amidst a press conference at the capital on Monday.

The winners of each group in the first round will progress to the second round, where twelve teams will compete in three groups of four teams each. The three winners and the best-ranked runners-up from the second round will advance to the third round, where four teams will play two pairs of home and away matches. The two eventual winners will qualify for the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.

Currently, the Nepalese team is in a close camp preparing for the qualifiers, while the Vietnam squad is scheduled to arrive in Kathmandu on April 3.
