Nawayug stuns Biratnagar; Chitwan-Butwal share spoils

Nawayug Shrestha opened his account in the Nepal Super League in style as Pokhara Thunders stunned Biratnagar City Football Club by 1-0 in the Nepal Super League match at Dasarath Stadium in Wednesday.

Skipper Shrestha’s goal seven minutes from time proved to be decisive as Thunders registered their first victory. Thunders lost their opening match against Butwal Lumbini by 1-0 and were in desperate need of win to climb from the bottom. Biratnagar having started the league with 3-0 win over Dhangadhi were second best in all departments.

Biratnagar’s coach Yan Law admitted his team were second best in the contest and the loss came just in time. ‘We didn’t turn up in the match and Pokhara bettered us. Our boys were a bit over confident and this came just in time. We can look back on improving points from here on,’ said disappointed Law after the loss.

In the first match of the day, Butwal Lumbini came back from two goal down to share a point each with FC Chitwan. Chitwan, who led in the match early from George Prince Karki’s goal soon doubled their lead. Tek Bahadur Budhathoki scored in goal-mouth meele to put Chitwan ahead. But Ashish Lama cut the deficit in the first half with a long ranger.

Laxman Ruchal equalized for Butwal in the second half. He made the most of goalkeeper Bishal Sunar’s error as his spill inside the box was punished well. Butwal piled on the pressure late on but Chitwan held off for a point.

Dhangadhi FC will face Lalitpur City FC in Thursday’s only match. Butwal is leading the table with 4 points while Biratnagar, Dhangadhi, Kathmandu RayZRs and Pokhara have 3 points each. Chitwan have 2 points while Lalitpur are bottom with a point.
