Kathmandu – Head coach of Nepal’s national cricket team Pubudu Dasanayake has said that the captain of the national cricket team will not be changed. He made such remark during a press conference organized on Thursday for the first time after taking charge of the national cricket team.

CAN had taken disciplinary action against Gyanendra Malla on November 15 and appointed Sandeep Lamichhane as the new captain in his place. Vice captain Dipendra Singh Aire was also axed while Sompal Kami and Kamal Singh Aire also faced action. They were not included in the grading system for the first six months of 2022. However, all four of them were included in the preliminary squad announced for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers to be held in Oman in February.

Dassanayake has made it clear that their priority now is preparation for the upcoming qualifiers.

“There are some issues between CAN and players of late. But the captain will not be changed. The decision of CAN’s board meeting will get continuity. CAN is very much flexible regarding other issues between the players and CAN. I will request CAN and its president to revoke its decision to remove four players from the grading system for the first six months of 2022,” said Dassanayake.

“I am thinking positive. But I once again want to make it clear that the CAN will not budge from its decision to appoint a new captain. We need to respect the decision taken by the board,” added Dassanayake.

Of late, Nepal’s cricket team is divided into different groups. Polarization between players close to Captain Sandeep Lamichhane and Gyanendra Malla is clearly evident. However, Dassanayake has said that the team will remain united.

Nepali cricket team will move forward in unity. One has to be proud after donning the logo of Nepal. The best players will be included in the national team. Nepal will have one team and one target,” assured Dassanayake.
