Burnley end Liverpool’s unbeaten run

Burnley pulled off a shock 1-0 Liverpool upset, snapping the 68-match home Premier League unbeaten streak of the Anfield side. The loss also extended their goalless run in the top flight in 2021.

The win at Liverpool was Burnley’s first since 1974 and sees the team of Jurgen Klopp fall further behind the Premier League leaders. Klopp had changed his forward line for the match, starting next to Sadio Mane with Divock Origi and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, while choosing Xherdan Shaqiri in midfield in his XI.

In the first half, Burnley, who entered the match four points above the relegation zone. They stood tall against Liverpool’s Premier League holders. Nick Pope made a nice save shortly after the half-hour from a well-hit Origi shot. In their previous four Premier League matches, Liverpool had managed just one goal. And, despite the added pressure on the visitors as the first half went on, they were unable to find an opener. Origi hit the post with only Pope to beat just before the break.

Klopp took Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah off the bench in the 57th minute, still chasing a breakthrough goal. Liverpool looked to keep pace at the top of the table after Manchester United and Manchester City won on Wednesday. Finally, Burnley took the lead late in the second half when, after Liverpool keeper, Alisson had tripped Barnes up in the D-box. Ashley Barnes scored from the penalty spot and gave Burnley the 3 important wins.

Liverpool, who last lost at home on April 23, 2017, stayed in fourth with 34 points in the table. While Burnley picked up a vital three points to distance them from the relegation zone.
