The All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) has called 58 players on close camp for the upcoming SAFF Women’s Championship to be held in Kathmandu next month.
Head Coach Kumar Thapa called 40 players who were in the training under National Sports Council (NSC) for 19th Asian Games (ASIAD) and 18 players were called on the basis of their performance in the first round of National Women’s League concluded in Chitwan on April 2022. According to ANFA, the training will begin from Monday.
Women’s National team skipper Renuka Nagarkoti, who was out from the ASIAD training due to injury is also called up for SAFF Championship training. On July 4, 2022, Renuka lost her balance and fell on the field after being tackled by Saraswati Ayer in the training session and got her left clavicle (collarbone) fractured. She underwent surgery on the same day. Doctor suggested her to stay out of the field for at least a month.
The sixth edition of SAFF Championship will begin from September 6 to 19, 2022. The matches of the championship are likely to be played at Dashrath Stadium. Along with the host Nepal, the seven countries of South Asia, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives and Bhutan will vie for the title. Five-time winners India are the strongest title contenders.
ANFA has appointed Kumar Thapa as the head coach and Bindra Dewan has been given the responsibility of team manager. In the tournament, Rabindra Chand will be the venue manager, Vijay Ghale will be the local general coordinator and Dinesh Byanjankar will be the security chief. Sanjeeb Shilpkar will take charge of marketing, broadcast and digital rights.
