Manchester United dumped Liverpool out of the FA Cup with a 3-2 victory on Sunday. The win set up a fifth-round tie at home to West Ham next month.
Bruno Fernandes scored a spectacular late free-kick to give Man Utd the win. Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood were also on the scoresheet when United booked their place in the competition’s fifth round. Mohamed Salah scored a brace for his first goals at Old Trafford, but the winless streak of Liverpool couldn’t stop.
Early on, Greenwood had two opportunities, but the first was saved by Alisson and the second went past the post. Liverpool subsequently began to dominate possession. Liverpool took the lead when Roberto Firmino slipped in Salah, who dinked the ball over Dean Henderson in the 19th minute. Greenwood set up Rashford to end, the hosts took the lead three minutes after half-time. But Liverpool reacted well and Salah grabbed his second on 58 minutes, just after a sitter was missed by James Milner.
On the break, Salah then went close to completing his hat trick, but shot Henderson straight. It was a miss that the Jurgen Klopp side would come to rue, as Fernandes’ replacement made a decisive intervention. Fernandes curved a free-kick past Alisson with 12 minutes left for his 16th goal of the season. The goal came after Edinson Cavani was fouled on the edge of Liverpool’s penalty area. Rashford left with a knee issue that Solskjaer said he’d have a scan on Monday, Cavani nearly made it four in the 90th minute, but the post was clipped by his header.
It was the first time that Liverpool have lost back-to-back matches in all competitions since March 2020.
