Arsenal beat Newcastle United 3-0 in the Premier League on Monday. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck twice, condemning Steve Bruce’s side to a ninth match without a victory in all competitions.
Mikel Arteta’s side are now up to 10th in the league after a terrible start to the season. They never looked in danger against a demoralized Newcastle side. Aubameyang had only netted three goals prior to Monday’s game; his manager was delighted to see him score his first double since last season’s FA Cup final.
In the first half, Aubameyang hit the post. Alexandre Lacazette forced a strong save from the Newcastle keeper. Newcastle pushed for the opening goal but couldn’t find it. After the loss to bottom club Sheffield United, Newcastle manager Steve Bruce had made eight changes to his squad. And he was disappointed his team did not build on a strong first half.
But in the 50th minute, Aubameyang eventually shot the Gunners forward. He ended a counter-attack, running at the defense of Newcastle and then blasting a strong left-foot drive at the near post home. A few minutes later Emile Smith Rowe jinked his way around the back of the Newcastle defense before making a precise pass, Bukayo Saka made it 2-0.
Saka who now has 7 involvements in the last 7 matches for Arsenal basted with a confident slot home ten minutes later. After Cedric Soares got to the byline and pulled the ball back into his direction, Aubameyang completed the comfortable win. Before Cedric’s pass, VAR checked whether the ball had crossed the line, but allowed the goal to stand.
In all competitions, Arsenal have now kept a clean sheet in five consecutive games.
