Shyam defends Top of the World Golf Classic title

Kathmandu – Reigning Champion Shyam Tamang defended the title of the Top of the World Golf Classic at the Mustang Golf Club in Lomanthang on Saturday.

Shyam accumulated 19 points to finish first in the second edition of the nine-hole competition played under the Stableford full handicap format. He previously won the inaugural edition of the competition last year, which was also the inauguration of the course situated at an altitude of 4650 meters from the sea level. Lila Jang Gurung came behind Shyam with 18 points.

Rabin Rana won the best gross award on countback. Rabin was tied with Yam Rana and PB Rai on 11 points. Bala Ram Thapa won the senior section title with 16 points. Juny Gurung was the women’s section winner with 15 points, while Susma Singh came second with 13 points.

Atmaram Simkhada won the most birdies award, while Maj Bejoy Gurung and Madhav Simkhada bagged the closest to the pin and longest drive award respectively. A total of 28 golfers including four women players participated in the tournament organized by Mustang Golf Course.

Lomanthang Rural Municipality President Tashi Norbu Gurung, vice-president Chhimi Bista, Administrative Officer Biddhi Ram Upadhyaya, Lo-Ghekar Damodarkunda Rural Municipality President Lobsang Chhompel Bista, Nepal Golf Association Vice-president Pavitra Kumar Karki and Mustang Golf Course Managing Director Indra Dhara Bista handed over prizes to the winners.

Mustang Golf Course MD Bista thanked the supporters and sponsors for making the event a grand success. “We are in the process of getting recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records and have already completed 75% work on that. Once we get the recognition, we will develop this course and bring in high-end tourists to play in the course,” he said. “We are already looking forward to inviting international participants in the third edition next year.”
