Kathmandu – A school-level boxing tournament is going to be held for the first time in Nepal later this month. The Sports Promotion Organisation of Nepal (SPON) is all set to organize the First All Nepal School Boys and Girls Boxing Championship 2022 from March 19 to 21 at the Covered Hall of the National Sports Council, Tripureshwar with technical support from Nepal Boxing Association.
Boxers between 12 to 14 years are eligible to compete in the event. The organisers informed that children born between January 2007 to December 31, 2009 will be allowed to contest in the tournament.
All the matches of the school-level championship will be held as per the rules of AIBA and Nepal Boxing Association. All the matches in boys’ and girls’ sections will be held for three rounds of 1 minute 30 seconds each. There will be an interval of 1 minute.
Boxers will be competing in 10 different weight categories in the boys section and 8 different weight categories in the girls section.
The organisers are expecting 70 to 80 players from schools and clubs of 22 to 25 districts to compete in the event. SPON has also signed an agreement with Nepal Boxing Association to hold the event regularly.
This championship will also serve as a preliminary selection of players for the ASBC Asian School Boys and Girls Boxing Championship to be held in Baharain in November.
During the championship, the Organisers will also conduct an open selection of players to compete in the Thailand Open International Boxing in April 2022.
Gold medalists of the 13th South Asian Games – Sanil Shahi (men’s 60 kg), Bhupendra Thapa (men’s 64 kg) and Minu Gurung (women’s 54 kg) will be awarded with cash prize of Rs 100,000 each during the championship.
